Arizona / Alberta TEOE Photography Exchange 2012 Exhibit

I’m very pleased to announce the launch exhibit for the first ever Arizona / Alberta TEOE international photography exchange! The exhibit will be held from October 30 – November 10, 2012 at the Art Intersection Gallery in Gilbert, Arizona. An artist reception will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 PM on Wednesday, November 7, where exhibit visitors can meet the photographers behind the project.

What’s this exhibit about? To recap, one of my major projects this year has been a collaborative effort with several other photographers: Sherwood Park-based Peter Carroll, and Arizonans Ken Ross and Colleen Miniuk-Sperry. Under the umbrella of the Phoenix group Through Each Others Eyes, the 4 of us tackled about 3 weeks worth of photo expeditions, traveling to locations around Arizona and Alberta. Our goal was to use our cameras to capture personal visions of these two iconic “western” North American regions, and then show the results through public exhibits of our photographs. The Arizonans would select a set of their work made in Alberta, while the Albertans would show work from Arizona. In this way, we would present a view of each area as seen through the eyes & lenses of the team members who were the visitors.

As I described in my past posts (including Whirlwind Tour), the field work was an intense but fantastic time. The 4 of us hit it off extremely well, considering that only the 2 from Arizona knew each other “in the real world” prior to this project. 🙂 (Pete and I knew of each other online but hadn’t ever worked together.) Despite our different approaches, subject matter favorites and visual styles, our field expeditions merged together in a truly shared & collaborative way. Very quickly, our work together developed a positive flow that I’ve rarely experienced even with teams that have gelled with each other for quite awhile longer.

Since the field work wrapped up in July, we’ve been madly busy, pulling together our photography and editing the results down into a final select body of work for the exhibits. Our first exhibit announced here will show 80 prints in a very nice setting. Art Intersection Gallery is a new venue for TEOE this year, but from what we’ve seen and heard it should be a fantastic location for our show. I’m confident visitors are going to see 4 interesting perspectives on Arizona and Alberta, represented through great photographs!

Pete and I are really looking forward to being down in the Phoenix area in the next few weeks, meeting again with our TEOE colleagues there. After all the fun and hard work up until now, it will be a thrill to see the entire set hanging on display. We’re also eager to talk to folks about the project — which at the end of the day is about building bridges of understanding and appreciation between people of different places and cultures.

But wait, there’s more! As a prelude to the launch exhibit, on October 27 there’s also going to be a Phoenix-area version of our presentation Stories Instead of Snaps. We gave this talk back in July at the seminar location of The Camera Store here in Calgary, while our Arizona team members were in town. The session was jam-packed with great tips and examples of how to improve at telling stories through photographs, and it was well received by everyone we spoke with afterward. Unfortunately I can’t make it to Phoenix for this second installment of our presentation, but my 3 team mates will be there. If you’re in the Phoenix area on Saturday, October 27, I hope you’ll come out to the event, see some great photography, and hopefully take away some good ideas for visual story telling. Location, time and registration info for the presentation can be found on the TEOE web site’s Stories Instead of Snaps event page.

And of course, these are just the initial launch events for our project work — there’s more to come. If you can’t make it to Gilbert or Phoenix but have access to the Calgary area, stay tuned for announcements of our Calgary-based exhibits & presentations to be held in early 2013!

For now, as a teaser, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite photographs from the project. When I needed a single image for the exhibit promo poster shown above, this is the one I chose. You can see it for real, along with many others, at one of our coming events…

Thanks Craig! Our team has been hard at work on this project for months, and we’re super pumped that results will be getting into public view very soon. 🙂
