Iceland 2012 Photo Results From the Group

June 18, 2012

As mentioned in a couple of other recent posts, one of my big trips this year was spending 2 weeks in Iceland. My wife Deb & I went with a group that was pulled together by Samantha Chrysanthou and Darwin Wiggett, with the event itself run by Tim Vollmer. This wasn’t a formal workshop as such, more a group of folks who have known or worked with each other in the past and all collectively shared an interest in exploring Iceland for the first time.

Iceland has been very high on my list for a long time, both for photography reasons and just to visit. Thanks to the itinerary that Tim put together for us all, after being there my single-word response is simply — WOW. I knew I would like it, but the reality of the place was way beyond what I had imagined in my head. I definitely need to go back, because the experiences and photographs from this initial visit were the merest scratching of the surface.

If I had been there on my own, might I have done certain things differently, changed the priorities of parts of the experience, or photographed more or less in some places? Sure. Going with a guide-organized plan and with a group who have diverse interests, I obviously knew that the entire time was not all about me. 🙂 But part of the appeal for me was to be with other like-minded photo enthusiasts and share our experiences, insights and responses with each other. And really, the opportunity for experience and photography was so rich each day that I have zero complaints. Far from it — for me, the trip was a success on every level.

On that note, while my own photos are most likely going to take awhile to start trickling out due to the press of another big project coming up right away (the TEOE Arizona / Alberta photo exchange), I wanted to link here to a few others from the group who are beginning to get their images online.

Cheers to the group — it was great seeing Iceland with y’all and I eagerly await views of this amazing country through each of your creative perspectives!

I think if I would have went on my own, I would have stopped at the first location and never moved. While many stops felt quick, I’m surprised how many locations we were able to visit each day.

Great post Royce. The trip was great and the more I look back, the greater it was. At the time I was a little disappointed with all the blue sky mid-day shooting. With all those hours of great light (8pm-8am) passing us by as we stayed put. But I have started processing my images and surprised even myself at what can be captured mid-day. And I’m certainly thrilled at how much we saw and how much territory we covered. It was also great scouting for future trips (future trips are a given). While people eagerly await your Iceland images, here are some of mine to tied them over 🙂
