Fall 2011 Photo Tour in the Canadian Rockies

August 8, 2011

Our fall tour group had an amazing time, this year! The season was moving at a more leisurely pace than usual, thanks to warmer- and wetter-than-usual conditions in the preceding weeks. Pockets of great color were everything, weather was throwing a lot of variations at us (including some wind & rain, but also great clouds and one stunning sunrise). Keeping active, we made the most of a diverse array of locations and subjects. Everyone was in agreement that the star attraction was a full day trip up to Lake O’Hara, truly one of the premier gems of the Canadian Rockies. But an excellent view of a Grizzly Bear was right up there, too!

A few of my photos from the tour will appear throughout the blog, have a look at posts tagged Fall 2011 Photo Tour. Also check out images submitted by tour participants:

If a Fall 2011 photo tour idea is still something you’re looking for, how about looking to the Canadian Rockies? Based at the ideally situated Aurum Lodge, with co-leaders Alan Ernst and myself, this tour will present an excellent opportunity for fall photography over a period of 5 nights and 6 days. We will cover locations in the front range territory of David Thompson Country (including Abraham Lake, pictured above), in the Rockies along the world-famous Icefields Parkway, and specifically with a day trip to stunning Lake O’Hara. Our base, Aurum Lodge, is a fantastic central location for photography in the Rockies.

Group size will be small — 6 participants, maximum. Our primary goal is to provide field-intensive photography opportunities to people at an intermediate to advanced level. (This is not an introductory workshop.) While the ideal participants will know how to operate the essential functions of their cameras and other equipment, and be equipped with a reasonable shooting kit for outdoor photography, we will provide participant-focused hands-on instruction in the field whenever needed. We can cover equipment, technique, composition, processing, and other topics. We will provide site orientations as we hit each new or different type of location. Photography opportunities will include landscapes, wildlife and macro, among others. To enjoy these opportunities, everyone will need a basic level of physical fitness; for the most part we’ll be out shooting when there is any light, and some hiking will be involved.

In order to maximize each person’s chances to capture the scenery to their satisfaction, we will by very dynamic in arranging where we go on each day. We’ll consider weather, other conditions, and participant interests. We’ll also incorporate a pair of indoor portfolio review sessions where we review images made by everyone during the event. In these sessions, we’ll be able to nail down techniques, use of equipment and approaches to composition that can be applied before the event is over. We’ll also view and consider some of each others’ work in order to gain inspiration and ways of seeing; this can be very exciting and educational in its own right!

Transportation to the photography locations will be based on car-pooling. Be prepared to share in some of the driving duties among the group as we move around the region. This is also a good opportunity to sit for a time with other group members and talk about whatever takes your fancy!
