Early Christmas — the Pentax 645D Arrives

November 19, 2010

A couple of weeks ago, I rhetorically asked “where’s my 645D”? The obvious answer is it was working its way through the pipeline from Pentax. The first cameras to arrive in Canada were called back before any customers got ahold of them, adding a bit more delay. Sounds like whatever the issue was with that first batch, it wasn’t something serious. Now a second shipment of cameras has hit Canada, surprisingly quickly I thought. Today I picked up mine from the fine folks at The Camera Store.

Can I holler “woo-hoo!” about a medium format camera, or would that be too undignified? Well, screw dignity… WOO-HOO! 🙂 I never shot medium format film, and historically I wasn’t a Pentax guy — but this is a camera I’ve been waiting for a long time. I believe it really has great potential, and I’m excited to get to work with it. My 645 lenses are pretty limited in selection right now, that’s something I’ve got to put some serious effort into dealing with in the coming weeks. The new FA 55mm f/4 lens is not here yet, so I’ll start with a couple of older design FA lenses.

Meanwhile, the rest of reality is still in force, and I’ve got a bunch of work to take care of this weekend. But Calgary was hit with our first blast of real winter this week, and there is some great, fresh snow & ice out there. I mean to go take a crack at it with the new rig.

The 645D’s battery is charging as I type this, and I’m looking for my spare Arca-Swiss plates right after I hit “post”…

looking forward to your thoughts on this camera.

As I plan to down size to smaller and smaller cameras, you are now tempting me with something large. It is always about size with us guys isn’t it?

Likewise, look forward to reading more about your experiences. Ah, if only we could shoot tethered with this camera – would be the answer to my dreams at this price point…
